Description
The A-Bomb Dome is the skeletal ruins of the former Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall. It is the closest building to the hypocenter of the nuclear bomb that remained at least partially standing. It was left as it was after the attack after the bombing in memory of the casualties. The Atomic Bomb was dropped on August 6, 1945, by the United States. Its devastation was horrific, as it literally wiped out the entire city of Hiroshima. Not only were as many as 140,000 people killed in the attack, but many died years later of cancer and other conditions that left many people ill. The A-Bomb Dome was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
